The Governor’s Proposal to Eviscerate Medi-Cal to the Federal Minimum Would Cut More Than 1.7 Million Poor People From the Medi-Cal Program.
03/08/2010

Western Center released a report showing that under the Governor’s proposal to cut Medi-Cal eligibility to the federal minimum more than 1.7 million poor children, parents, seniors, and people with disabilities would lose their Medi-Cal health coverage.

In January, Governor Schwarzenegger proposed elimination of programs and reductions in services used by millions of Californians. Among his proposed cuts, the Governor's budget posits that if California does not receive $6.9 billion in additional federal funds, the state will cut Medi-Cal eligibility to the federal minimum and eliminate the Healthy Families Program.

Today, the Western Center on Law & Poverty (WCLP) released a report documenting who would be impacted by the proposed Medi-Cal cuts. This report explains that a cut to the federal minimum would result in more than 1.7 million poor children, parents, seniors, and people with disabilities losing the healthcare they need to live healthy, productive, and dignified lives.  If Healthy Families were eliminated more than 875,000 children would lose coverage.
