Time to End the CalWORKs Auto Resource Rule

Western Center publishes a new paper explaining why Assembly Bill 1182, a bill Authored by Assemblyman Hernández and sponsored by the New America Foundation, which ends the CalWORKs Auto Resource Rule is good for families moving from welfare to work and for the state's bottom line.


California’s policy makers are once again considering joining 39 other states that have eliminated the auto-resource barrier for participants in the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program. Though this issue has been debated in our state’s capitol for several years, there is great hope that, this year, lawmakers will understand the urgent need to better use the scarce resources to leverage increased work participation rates and, ultimately, achieve a higher percentage of CalWORKs participants transitioning to economic independence.
