Governor's Plan Breaks Our Commitment to Poor Families With Children
The Western Center on Law and Poverty today released their letter of opposition to the Senate and Assembly Budget Committee on Governor Brown's $1.4 billion cut to the CalWORKs program. The proposal would cause extreme hardship for hundreds of thousands of the poorest families in the state. It would tightly limit the opportunity for education, training and services tjhat are key to helping move families to self-sufficiency. The proposal is actually designed not to help families but to help the state bridge the budget gap by taking money from poor children. WCLP calls on the Legislature to reject this proposal and begin a real dialogue about how the state can help poor families escape poverty.
