National Crown Day Marks the 1-Year Anniversary of the Signing of the Crown Act

“The Crown Coalition is officially declaring July 3, 2020 a national holiday. On the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Crown Act, National Crown Day will serve as a day to stand in solidarity with Black people and the right to wear their natural hair without fear of discrimination. The coalition, founded by Dove, National Urban League, Color of Change, and the Western Center on Law and Poverty, announced the holiday in a press release on June 30.”

Crown act focused on ending hair discrimination expands to help fight against all forms of systemic racism

“In 2019, a Black beauty alliance was formed with the goal of “creating a respectful and open world for natural hair.” Dove teamed up with the National Urban LeagueColor of Change, and the Western Center on Law and Poverty to form the CROWN Coalition and help push legislation that would prevent employers and schools from discriminating against a person based on their natural hairstyle.”

New York State Follows California in Banning Hair Discrimination

The fight to legally protect black women and men with natural hair just gained another ally. On July 12th, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed assembly bill 007797to prohibit “race discrimination based on natural hair or hairstyles” in the state of New York.

…The Crown Coalition, which is comprised of the the National Urban League, Western Center on Law & Poverty, Color Of Change, and Dove, hoped this would encourage other states to follow California’s lead.
