Celebrating Women’s History Month & César Chávez Day Via Our Annual Report

Three months into 2021, it’s clear that our collective experience of 2020 likely changed us forever. The drumbeat for racial and economic justice continues to expand, and work from 2020 is beginning to form a foundation for a stronger society — with stronger safety nets, better access to health care, a greater emphasis on housing as a human right, and steady demands for true economic and racial equity.

To recap Western Center’s 2020, we invite you to take a look at our 2020 Annual Report, which features art from Kelly Malka and Miki Turner, two incredibly talented women whose art brings our work from 2020 to life. Malka and Turner’s pieces beautifully complement each other and our 2020 accomplishments; we are incredibly grateful for their contributions to our report, especially as we wrap up Women’s History Month.

Our report isn’t the only must-read as we head out of Women’s History Month. We also encourage you to take a look at the Mount Saint Mary’s University 2021 Report on the Status of Women and Girls in California, as well as the Black Women’s Roundtable report, Black Women in the U.S. 2021: Priorities, Policy and Power.

And as we celebrate the indelible César Chávez today, we look to the road he and Californians like Dolores Huerta paved in the fight for united coalitions working against poverty, injustice, and inequality. In that spirit, we stand with all AAPI communities in the demand to Stop Asian Hate. We are proud to have staff members like attorney Helen Tran leading on the issue and pushing for greater solidarity, particularly with the Black Lives Matter movement, which inspired her recent actions.

Chávez’s clear-eyed vision for the people of California continues to ring true through every movement, and we are fortunate to exist in the glow of his ongoing legacy. Look closely in our annual report, and you will find one of our favorite Chávez quotes:

“History will judge societies and governments — and their institutions — not by how big they are or how well they serve the rich and the powerful, but by how effectively they respond to the needs of the poor and the helpless.”

Happy César Chávez Day, happy Women’s History Month, and happy Annual Report reading!
