EPIC News – January 2021

Happy New Year! We hope you had a healthy, rejuvenating beginning to 2021.

Help Stop Evictions

First things first: on January 31st millions of Californians will face eviction and crushing rent debt due to the pandemic and state-mandated shutdowns, unless the California Legislature and Governor act quickly. Please call your state legislators and tell them to pass AB 15 and AB 16: stop the eviction cliff, forgive COVID debts, and provide relief for small landlords.

Meet Western Center’s New Advocates

We are thrilled to introduce the three newest members of Western Center’s team, based in Sacramento: Cynthia Castillo, Tina Rosales, and Christopher Sanchez. They hit the ground running on January 6th, working to keep Californians housed, fed, and financially secure in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. We couldn’t be happier to have them on board. Find out more about Cynthia, Tina, and Christopher here.

Understand the Governor’s Budget

Governor Gavin Newsom released his proposal for the 2021-2022 state budget on January 8th. The proposal isn’t austere, but it is conservative with its long term outlook and ambition for addressing the state’s growing economic inequality. Meanwhile, the wealthy in California got much wealthier last year, so there’s more money available for the budget than anticipated. Read our breakdown and analysis of the proposed budget here.
